Wales' 2nd International Tango Festival

at Swansea University

We would like to welcome you to the Wales’ 2nd International Tango Festival.  The event will be run from Friday 29th November to Monday 2nd December and includes workshops from some of the World’s top tango teachers and performers as well as local talent, a lecture and concert plus a a welcome milonga, a live music milonga ball with hot buffet and a live music chillout milonga tea dance.  There will also be stalls selling clothing and shoes (ideal for Christmas presents).  The event is aimed at all types and levels of tango dancer and we are sure no matter what your preference you will find something you enjoy.  There is also limited opportunities to have private lessons from our guest teachers.

Workshop 1:  19:00-20:00 Introduction to Tango (B) taught by Susan Pesticcio and Sian Fussell

Welcome Milonga: 20:00-22:00.  2 Room milonga hosted by Sian and Mike Fussell,  with one room playing Traditional Music Dj'd by Nick Jones and the other playing Nuevo, Alternative and Blues Music DJ'd by Wayne Rozier 

Saturday

Workshop O  12:00-13:10 Tangosteopathy- An unique opportunity to experience the learning of Tango dance movements through the lenses of a holistic, whole-body specialized concept as Osteopathy taught by Diana Cruz and Karin Gerhardt


Workshop 2.  13:15-13:50 Boleos to Colgadas,  taught by UTN (B/I).  

Workshop 3a: 14:00-14:50 Play it in cross system - knowing all your options,  taught by Eduardo Bozzo (B/I)

Workshop 3b: 14:00-14:50 Blues, Taught by the Island Dance Wizards (I/A)​

Workshop 4a: 15:00-15:50 Rebounds cadence and sacada for tango and vals, taught by Eduardo Bozzo (I/A)

Workshop 5a: 16:00-16:50 Composition: Switching Sequences between Leaders&Followers.  Taught by Nick Jones and Diana Cruz (I/A)

Workshop 5b: 16:00-16:50 , Canyengue: Going back to the start.  An introduction to the earliest form of Tango, taught by UTN. (B) 

Workshop 6: 17:10-18:30  Ganchos Combinations, Taught by Nick Jones and Diana Cruz (I)

Break/Practica 18:30-19:30

Milonga Ball: 19:30-midnight.  The ball will feature two live sets from Cabaret Tango and DJing from UTN who will be playing an equal mixture of traditional, nuevo and alternative music with some festive cortinas so that everybody has something to dance to.  There will also be a hot buffet supplied and Performances from Nick and Diana. 

 

Sunday 

Breakfast Cafe: 9:30-11:00 Breakfast of cereal, yogurt and croissants provided with live guitar music Chris Rogers plus an option to do a 45 minute  Pilates-inspired, solo movement class, which will explore posture, balance and core conditioning to bring you new confidence and comfort - before, during an with Helen Hedworth

Workshop 7: 11:00-11:50 Crossing to Modern Jive, ways to use the cross to fusion between tango and Modern Jive style dances. Taught by UTN B/I

Workshop 8: 12:00-12:50 Tango Blues Fusion, Taught by IDW B/I

 

OR 

Workshop X: 11:00-13:00 Small Group Taught by Nick Jones and Diana Cruz.  This workshop will be limited to just 8 couples who will have the teachers undivided attention.  

Lunch Break: 13:00-13:30 Picnic Buffet Provided

Lecture: 13:30-14:10 Talk by Mirek Salmon on the Life and Works of Astor Piazzolla.

Concert: 14:15-15:00  Performance of selected Piazzolla's Chamber  Music with Tango Calor     

Chillout Milonga Tea Dance: 15:00-18:00.  To finish off the weekend a chance to dance and socialise to relaxing music.  Live music from Tango Calor and DJing from UTN who will be play a range of chillout music include tango, blues, smooth modern jive plus much more.

 

Monday

Lunchtime Class:  13:00-14:00.  FREE Class in the Taliesin Create Studio, Swansea University with Urban Tango Nights.   

 

Class and Practica:  19:30-22:30:  Free Class followed by a practica with Urban Tango Nights, held in Peppermint on Wind St.

Teachers, Bands and DJs

Nick Jones and Diana Cruz are tango performers and teachers that travel the world sharing their technique and structure so that each individual student can ultimately reach their own expression in the dance. They believe that the goal of a teacher is to give everything away to the student, while the goal of the performer is to hide their secrets, so they can enamour and bedazzle the audience. The Island Dance Wizards Basil and Mandy, The Island Dance Wizards, are professional dancers who reside and  teach on the Isle of Wight as well as teaching popular workshops on the mainland. With almost 50 years of full time professional teaching experience between them they specialise in Argentine Tango, Traditional Blues and Tango/Blues Fusion and have gained a formidable reputation for delivering Classes, Workshops and Private Lessons that do exactly what they say on the tin. Eduardo Bozzo comes from a family with a long tradition of tango. He has been teaching Tango Argentino for more than 20 years.  He debuted in 2002 at the London Opera House and and Royal Albert Hall and went on to perform around the country.  He believes passionately in tango’s intrinsic freedom of emotion and expression, respecting its cherished tradition while playing with the sensuality and creativity only tango can offer.  https://www.tangoalchemy.co.uk/

Sue Pesticcio teaches Argentine tango at Ardour Dance Academy Cardiff. She is a member of the Tango Y Nada Mas - Tango Alchemy group and has been dancing tango for more than 18 years. Siân Fussell together with Michael founded Tango Y Nada Mas in 2000 at Morganstown, Cardiff. She has danced and learned tango for 22 years and now works with Sue at Ardour Academy and assists Eduardo Bozzo in running Morganstown tango events.

Helen Hedworth is a life-long dancer, qualified fitness instructor and trainee Pilates instructor. She first fell in love with tango 12 years ago and, combining her dance experience with her biological training, enjoys helping others to get the best out of their bodies.

Urban Tango Nights (UTN) is a tango club based in Swansea taught by Chris and Alison with an aim for promoting all aspects of tango.  Their teaching style is based on understanding of technique and breaking down components to their simplest elements while encouraging self-discovery and experimentation.  Read more about them on their website:  urbantangonights.wixsite.com/mysite 

Mirek Salmon is an experienced accordionist, pianist and bandoneonist. His busy freelance career has seen him perform onstage at WOMAD, London and Cheltenham jazz festivals as well as live performances on BBC Radio 4 and Radio 3.  His recent emergence on the tango scene has seen him play bandoneon at many tango clubs around the country, with his own trio Tango Calor and with the London Tango Orchestra. http://www.mireksalmon.com/ 


Cabaret Tango is a Bristol Based group of musicians playing an eclectic fusion of alternative and traditional tango music.

 

Tango Calor is a Bristol tango band featuring Mirek Salmon on bandoneon, Indira Roman singing and Daan Temmink on piano..

Wayne Rozier has run Tango FFS. for 10 years, with Jive-fusion nights, Alt and modern tango dances, traditional tango, Blues dance nights.  He is also the resident DJ at Papa Caliente and it is held in St Laurence’s Church, Reading. http://www.tangoffs.co.uk/

The University has plenty of free car parking at the weekend.  During the event the University bar will be open until 1am and the shop until 10pm, both are situated in the same building as the room we will be using.  There will also be a number of food outlets open around the campus.     

There is no accommodation included with any of the passes, however Swansea has a range of hotels situated close to the venue, the city centre, Mumbles and the Gower (ideal if you want to extend your trip and explore some of Britain’s most beautiful scenery).
